Craig’s List - A Biltmore Blunder

Welcome to Craig’s List. No, not that one.

Hello. My name is Craig and I like making lists of things that I think are cool, weird, and might make you question my judgement. At the very least, they’re interesting. So, welcome. I hope you enjoy.

The List:

1. A Biltmore Blunder

TikToker Marc Sebastian has had an ongoing series called the The Great American Gay Sidequest which has been very entertaining. Recently, as part of a holiday edition of his series, he went to the Biltmore in Asheville, NC. It was his most voted place to visit via his fans. Unfortunately, it ended up being a complete fiasco.

Part way through his self-guided tour of the estate, an employee approached him about not having permission to film. As Marc says in his 15-minute-long video, that’s absolute nonsense. If you go on TikTok, you’ll find thousands of influencer videos featuring the Biltmore.

Some people in his comments talked about how the Biltmore’s conservative leanings can make it uncomfortable for non-conforming visitors. The Biltmore has since apologized, but not before getting raked over the coals in the comment sections of their TikTok videos.

@marcsebastianf number one most voted place for me to go and now we have beef @biltmoreestate 🏦 Biltmore Mansion in Asheville, NC #agreatamericangaysidequest #agreatamericanholigaysidequest ♬ original sound - Marc Sebastian

2. A dumb thread about North Carolina cuisine

As a long-time North Carolina resident, I find that it punches well above its weight as a food destination. So I’m quick to defend any slander.

When I came across this thread, it got a proper guffaw out of me. The idea of someone critiquing the national fast food chains of a state they’re visiting is so ridiculous. I mean, if they’re going to critique local chains like Cookout or Bojangles, that would be one thing. But this has to be one of the dumbest food-related takes I’ve ever seen.

If this is how you evaluate a state’s food scene, just stay home.

3. Kicking schadenfreude

Back in May of 2024, Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker gave the commencement speech at Benedictine College. It was extremely misogynistic urging female graduates to be homemakers. Again, this was directed towards women who were getting their diplomas that day. He also referenced Pride Month as sinful, and made a whole bunch of other disgusting comments.

Since then, Kansas City was defeated so badly in the Super Bowl that he didn’t even get the chance to kick a field goal or extra point. And this year, he’s had the worst season of his career, leading many to speculate that this will be his last with the Chiefs.

I find all of these developments very satisfying.

Craig’s List - The Beginning

Welcome to Craig’s List. No, not that one.

Hello. My name is Craig and I like making lists of things that I think are cool, weird, and might make you question my judgement. At the very least, they’re interesting. So, welcome. I hope you enjoy.

The List:

1. The r/art subreddit is currently in the throws of a self-inflicted disaster.

Artist Hayden Clay is a frequent poster on r/art. Someone in the comments asked about purchasing his artwork and Clay mentioned he has prints available (it’s against the subreddit rules to promote your art). For that egregious error, a mod decided to ban him. Clay reached out in the DMs asking why that happened and the mod proceeded to delete his entire post history. The following backlash against the r/art mods caused them all to quit the subreddit. Quite an embarrassing display from someone who let such a small amount of power go to their heads.

2. One of my new favorite TikTok accounts is Andy’s Watches.

I’m a wannabe watch guy, so Andrew Berke’s content is right up my alley. He reviews watches, but with a fun and unique hook. He reviews other people’s watch collections “without their permission”. When you post content on a public platform, no one needs to ask for you permission to create a video commenting on it. But I appreciate the phrasing because it’s a fun hook to get your attention. What I like the most about his videos is that he’s very dry and very kind. It doesn’t matter if you have a $30 Casio or a $30,000 Patek Phillipe, if it’s interesting or meaningful, he’s going to give it a good review.

3. The Panthers’ Big Win

If you’re even a casual football fan, you probably heard about the Panthers’ huge win against the Los Angeles Rams. It was not only one of the best games of the year, it was also one of the best Panthers’ games I’ve ever seen. I’ve loved watching this team grow and improve. And the Panthers’ social team also does a great job with their content, especially when it comes to be petty (as someone who’s been behind the scenes for a brand’s social content, this is something I really appreciate).
